Christchurch man catches thieves stealing his caravan on camera

Two crooks have stolen a man's caravan in Christchurch - all of which was caught on camera.

Bevan Allington posted security footage and images on Facebook of the pair, wearing hi-vis vests, driving out of his Wainoni property with the motorhome.

Police said a report was received about the stolen caravan about 11:25am on Thursday. A spokeswoman said an investigation is continuing and the caravan has not been located.

Allington says the alleged thieves cut the padlock on the gate of his property, before backing their car up the driveway, and driving away within 20 minutes of arriving.

"Lock away caravans, trailers, boats if possible out of sight," his Facebook post says.

"No amount of locking will stop determined [thieves].

"These [thieves] need to be stopped before they strike again!"

Facebook page 'Stolen Caravans In NZ' appears to show a rise in caravan thefts. At least five reports of stolen motorhomes have been posted in the private group since February.

Police could not confirm a spike, as statistics on motorhome thefts aren't kept, a spokeswoman said.

"The theft offence level doesn't break down to that level in our statistics," she said.

"Like any vehicle, campervans should be locked and secured and valuables stored elsewhere or out of site."
