Christchurch terror attack: Victim Support reveals how much to be paid to victims on Tuesday

Victim Support says it will pay $15,000 to the next-of-kin of those killed in the Christchurch terror attack.

Announcing its plans for the distribution of the remaining funds raised through the Christchurch Shooting Victims' Fund appeal on Friday, Victim Support chief executive Kevin Tso said they had committed all their energy and resources to support those affected by the attacks.

Payment amounts were not released to the media on Friday so the victims could be informed before the general public, a Victim Support spokesperson told Newshub.

"The lump sums will be deposited into the victim's accounts over the following four to five business banking days."

Victim Support had previously faced criticism from traumatised victims who said they had been left struggling.

One of those was victim Yama Nabi, whose father was killed at Al Noor Mosque, and still struggling to make ends meet. He told Radio New Zealand he was forced back into his job at the meat works, facing flashbacks to seeing blood on the steps of the mosque.

In addition to the $15,000 payment, Victim Support says $12,000 will be paid to those who were physically injured in the attacks, and those who were present at either mosques - Al Noor or Linwood - at the time of the shootings.

Tso earlier said he wanted to reassure victims they would continue to provide them with practical and emotional support.

The latest payment would bring the total distributed to victims to $7 million. A final payment would be made in June once all donations had been received and the final appeal total was known.

"The distribution of the final donated funds does not mean our job is done," Tso said.
