Dramatic video has captured the moment a police Eagle helicopter landed in the middle of State Highway 1 in Auckland after a person fell from a moving vehicle.
Emergency services were called to the incident on the northbound lane between the Ellerslie Panmure Highway on-ramp and the Greenlane East off-ramp at around 11:15am on Thursday.
The person died at the scene after receiving urgent medical assistance, a statement from police says.
Witness Rosina Graham told Newshub she saw a person receiving medical attention in the middle of the road.
"A man was being given CPR in the middle lane of the northbound traffic, and the traffic had been jammed right up to the Mt Wellington on-ramp."
All four northbound lanes were closed but have since been reopened, with motorists warned to expect congestion.
Video posted to Twitter by NZTA showed the moment the helicopter landed on the road as motorists watched.
The helicopter landed on the motorway twice but has now left the scene. The serious crash unit is in attendance.
