A major emergency response in Dunedin's waters on Sunday morning is being blamed on a hoax call.

A distress call was received just after 9am, claiming to be from a vessel off the coast of Port Chalmers.

The caller claimed they were in a boat that was in distress with 30 people on board, but gave no details to the location or name of their vessel.

Police units were sent out but couldn't find any trace of the boat.

Dunedin's harbourmaster is confident there are no boats in trouble in the area.
