A man brandishing what is believed to be a gun made off with cash after robbing a petrol station in Picton.

The man walked into the Challenge petrol station on Kent St, Picton around 4:20pm on Thursday.

He took an amount of cash and left on foot. He was later seen getting into the driver's seat of a single-cab black Holden Commodore ute.

Police located and arrested a man believed to be behind the robbery overnight. He is expected to appear in Blenheim District Court on Friday charged with aggravated robbery.
