Police have launched a homicide inquiry after a fight in Porirua left a man dead.

Police were called to the scene on Parumoana St at 5:40pm on Thursday.

The man was found with serious injuries and given medical assistance, but died at the scene.

A police spokesperson told Newshub the incident occurred outside Te Rauparaha Park.

The spokesperson said they could not confirm the man had been stabbed, but that it was a "serious assault."

An investigation is underway, and police are working to understand the circumstances of the man's death.

A woman at the scene told Stuff she had seen the man and his younger brother half an hour before the incident.

When she came out of the nearby supermarket, she saw police officers on Jellicoe Street, standing alongside the younger brother.

"When I asked him what happened, he said 'my brother got stabbed," the woman told Stuff.

Anyone with information regarding the situation is asked to call Wellington police on (04) 381 2000.
