A man has been charged with assault after a man died after getting into a fight in Porirua on Thursday evening.

Police launched a homicide inquiry. Officers were called to Te Rauparaha Park at 5:40pm, where the man died at the scene.

A woman told Stuff she saw the man and his younger brother half-an-hour before the incident. When she came out of the nearby supermarket, she saw police officers on Jellicoe St, standing alongside the younger brother.

"When I asked him what happened, he said 'my brother got stabbed," she told Stuff.

A police spokesperson told Newshub they could not confirm this, only that it was a serious assault.

Police would still like to hear from witnesses or anyone who can help the investigation.

People can call Wellington police on (04) 381 2000 or anonymously speak to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
