A man is in hospital after an apparent road rage incident in Auckland on Saturday night.

Police say two drivers pulled over on the site of the Albany Highway between Unsworth Heights and Upper Harbour Dr around 9:15pm.

"It appears the victim has been carried on the bonnet of the offending vehicle and then run over by this car," said Det Snr Sgt Kim Libby.

The 49-year-old victim was left with serious injuries before the offender drove off.

The offender's vehicle is described as a "small white Japanese Hatchback, similar to a Toyota Starlet".

"Police urge the driver of this vehicle to contact us," said Libby.
