Protester injured after confrontations outside Dunedin mineral conference

A protestor has been taken to hospital after confrontations outside a mineral conference in Dunedin.

Abby Spilg-Harris from the Stop The Minerals Forum Coalition said the person could have a broken knee, and claims security has been out of order.

A St John spokesman confirmed to Newshub a woman was taken to Dunedin Hospital with minor injuries.

Protestors blockaded the Dunedin Town Hall trying to keep delegates out. A door was chained and some protestors superglued their hands to a door handle.

Dunedin City Mayor Dave Cull blasted any promotion of fossil fuels - saying it's at odds with his community and council.

Cull made clear to delegates if they're promoting fossil fuel exploration, extraction and exploitation, they're at odds with the community and his Council.

He referred to decades of inaction by local, central and international governments - as well as the fossil fuel industry - on climate change.

Undermining of healthy public policy by the powerful influence of vested interests can no longer be tolerated, he said.

Conference organiser Chris Baker said the mayor told them in advance they might not like some of what he had to say.

Baker said the forum covers a spectrum of mining interests, with just 11 percent of the 300 attendees being coal employees.
