New Zealand's longest-serving prisoner has been denied parole again.

Serial paedophile Alfred Vincent, 81, has spent 51 years in prison after being sentenced to preventive detention.

He was convicted in 1968 on seven convictions of indecent assault on five boys aged between 12 and 14. By then he had six prior convictions from three separate court cases over indecent assault against young boys.

In jail, Vincent claimed he had assaulted as many as 500 boys in Canterbury between the 50s and 70s, however that number hasn't been verified.

The recidivist paedophile first became eligible for parole 40 years ago, but the Parole Board says Vincent continues to be a risk.

"It is very clear from the reports we have that he is continuing to focus on inappropriate sexualised behaviour," the Board said in a statement on Monday.

"That presents risks for not only himself but any other patients of any facility he should be referred to."

The Board has asked to see a formalised release proposal to a hospital facility at the next hearing in August.
