Truck driver not at fault in Dunedin lime scooter crash - report

A police investigation has reportedly found a rider seriously injured after colliding with a truck had run a red light.

Emergency services were called to State Highway 1 near Dundas St at about 1:45am on Friday, January 18.

The scooter rider, 26-year-old foreign national Renee Whitehouse, received serious injuries to her head, and later told Stuff she thinks helmets should be provided for everyone who uses the scooters.

A police investigation has now found Whitehouse failed to stop at a red traffic light and collided with the truck, Stuff reports.

The investigation found the truck's driver did everything possible to avoid a collision.

Lime scooters launched in Dunedin in January, among concerns riders would use them irresponsibly or injure themselves.

It took less than a day for footage to emerge of a teenager riding an e-scooter down Baldwin St, the world's steepest residential street.

Auckland Council temporarily forced the Lime scooters off the street at the end of February over safety concerns due to reports the scooters' wheels would lock up at high speeds.

They returned in March after firmware upgrades.
