Weather: Strong winds ease as Monday dawns

Wild weather that lashed the country overnight has eased, but the scale of the damage left behind remains to be seen.

MetService issued a raft of severe weather warnings for Sunday evening and early Monday morning due to concerns about wind and rain.

Vector crews will return at first light to restore power in some parts of west, north and east Auckland.

Restoration work is largely complete, after winds recorded at up to 80km/h battered the city throughout the night.

Homes in Waitoki, near Dairy Flat, and Mount Albert were without power early this morning.

National Party MP Paula Bennett lost power at her home in Oratia, posting on Twitter her cooking had been interrupted.

She later posted a photo of her husband eating dinner in the dark while wearing a headlamp to see.

Most of the severe weather watches issued overnight expired early on Monday, with only a strong wind watch remaining for Wellington and the Chatham Islands.

The watch in Wellington will expire at 9am, while the Chathams' one will end at 1pm.
