Armed offenders squad called to incident at Whenuapai Air Force Base

A man has been taken into custody without incident at Whenuapai Air Force Base, and is being questioned by police.

The arrest comes after a major police operation at the base in Auckland after a man made threats.

Police said emergency services responded along with the armed offenders squad.

NZME reports someone drove into a hangar and made threats about having explosives.

As a precaution, roads leading to the area have been cordoned off, including the Whenuapai motorway off-ramps, police said in a statement.

Auckland Transport advises motorists to stay clear of the area and cordons remain in place until further notice.

The cordons leading to the base (Brigham Creek Road, etc) have been stood down, however the base itself remains closed down while NZDF staff help ensure it's confirmed safe.

The arrested man is expected to appear in Waitakere District Court tomorrow - charges are yet to be laid.
