Auckland woman's tank raffle shut down by Internal Affairs

An Auckland woman trying to raffle off her ex-British army tank has hit a snag

The Department of Internal Affairs has shut the raffle down, saying she doesn’t have the right license.

But with so many people keen to win the tank, she’s rolling ahead to barge through the red tape.

Makare Edmonds-Phillips set up a raffle for an FV432 armoured personnel carrier with tickets $100 each.

There was a huge amount of interest from both military buffs and ordinary Kiwis keen to spice up their commute.

But out of the blue on Tuesday, Internal Affairs shut the whole scheme down. The value of the tank means it's classified as a Class 3 gambling action and the raffle must be run by an authorised society.

But Edmonds-Phillips hasn't been discouraged by the setback.

Speaking to The Project from inside the tank itself, she said she intends to apply for a Class 3 license and run the raffle again.

"I owe it to the people."

She said her partner and his friends found the vintage vehicle on TradeMe.

"A truck pulled up and sure enough a tank came off the truck, I was like 'what the hell?' Couldn't believe it."

Good news for interested parties - she said no particular license is needed to drive a tank.

"I think you can just jump in and take off, I know my dad does."

The tank has become a popular feature on the marae, with visitors coming by to pose for photos on a daily basis. She even hinted some international celebrities have visited the tank, but wouldn't give any more specific details.

The raffle winner will even be able to play music in the tank - although Edmonds-Phillips said no Taylor Swift is allowed.
