A homicide investigation is underway in Auckland following the death of a 16-month-old baby.

The child was rushed to Starship with serious head injuries last Sunday, and police don't believe they were an accident.

The child died Saturday afternoon.

A scene examination has been conducted at an Auckland property, and a post-mortem will be carried out.

Police say they have 20 people working on the case.

"The death of any child is an absolute tragedy and we are working hard to establish what has caused the child’s injuries," said Det Snr Sgt Geoff Baber.

"We have previously said that we believe these are non-accidental injuries."
