Boxes of unclaimed ashes reunited with family members after appeal

They know their names, but what two Oamaru funeral directors didn't know was who the relatives of 16 boxes of ashes belonged to.

In a variety of boxes and containers, the unclaimed ashes have sat at Whitestone Funerals for a long time - one since 1970.

"We would like to return them if possible to their loved ones," funeral director Rose Gard told Newshub.

Ashes go unclaimed for a variety of reasons - sadly some are just simply forgotten.

So that's why last week the women took out an advertisement in The Oamaru Mail, hoping to jog memories and reunite loved ones.

They say the response has been incredible.

"Lots of family members have come out of the woodwork and didn't even know had no idea their relatives ashes have been here," funeral directors manager Janeen Paull said.

Ten of the 16 have been claimed - Gard amazed with the outcome.

They really shouldn't be sitting in our cupboard unclaimed," she told Newshub. "People need to claim them and lay them to rest somewhere that's fitting for the person that died, or the family feel is fitting for the person."

Any ashes that remain unclaimed will be interred in the funeral homes memorial garden next month.
