A Christchurch school was placed into lockdown and a busy street was closed by police after reports of a person with a firearm.

A police spokeswoman said they were called to the scene on Matipo St, in the suburb of Riccarton, about 3:30pm.

Police along with the Armed Offenders Squad responded. Newshub understands an air rifle was mistaken for an assault rifle.

Police told nearby Wharenui School to go into lockdown while the incident unfolded, a spokeswoman told NZME.

Emergency services have since left the scene. A Christchurch Transport Operations Centre spokesperson said the road was closed but has since reopened.

Police said more information will be released when it becomes available.
