Warm fuzzies are taking on a literal meaning for Aucklanders in need on Saturday.

Handmade hats, beanies and scarves will be handed out in Britomart's Takutai Square.

Make Give Live co-founder Becky Smith hopes it brightens someone's day.

"We hope that by giving out just a small item like a hat, it's about more than just a hat - it's about showing your kindness and that you're thinking about somebody."

Smith says it's also about making connections.

"We do give out hats to older people as well. It's a great opportunity to have a conversation, maybe have a cup of tea - that might be the only conversation that person's had in several days."

Smith says they can always use more hands.

"All they have to do is come along, turn up and sit down - we give them the patterns, we give them the yarn, and they can just enjoy being part of the group. No barriers."

The big beanie giveaway takes place from 10:30am to 2:30pm.
