The wreckage of a light plane that went missing after leaving the Coromandel has been found.

It took off from Whitanga Airport on Friday, but never reached its destination.

The two-seater aircraft had just one person on board. The alarm was raised just after 4pm on Friday when it failed to arrive as planned at Ardmore Airport.

The Rescue Coordination Centre says weather conditions at the time were poor and prevented an aerial search by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

A ground search has been underway in the Coromandel Forest Park began at first light. The plane was found on Saturday morning by LandSAR staff.

The condition of the pilot remains unknown.
