Motorists on Auckland's main motorway are being warned to expect "lengthy delays" after a crash blocking multiple lanes.

At 3:35pm on Saturday, a crash just before Princess St on Auckland's southbound Southern Motorway blocked multiple lanes.

"Delays are building quickly so avoid the area if possible," NZTA wrote in a tweet.

The crash was cleared at 4pm, but the transport agency said delays should still be anticipated.

"Road users should continue to expect length delays in the area".

Police also released a statement advising of delays in the area and calling on motorists to "avoid the area" if possible.
