Residents of Onekawa's Alexander Avenue in Napier may not be able to return to their homes as a police standoff continues in the area.

At 8:30pm the operation had been underway for about six hours.

Police say residents who cannot return to their homes are able to keep warm at the Kings House Church.

Residents currently inside the cordons are asked to remain indoors until the incident is resolved.

Four Napier schools were given the all clear earlier on Monday to come out of police lockdown following an armed incident at a nearby property.

William Colenso College, Richmond School, Henry Hill School and Maraenui Bilingual School were placed into lockdown at around 2:30pm Monday afternoon.

A police spokesperson confirmed this afternoon that police are responding to an incident at a property in Onekawa, Napier. The Armed Offenders Squad were also called to the scene.

No injuries have been reported.

A number of the schools kept parents and locals updated through their Facebook pages, advising people to stay away from the schools and to not pick up children.

The schools came out of lockdown around 4pm. However, police are still responding to the Onekawa incident. Cordons will remain in place.

Richmond School said on Facebook that the children were safely secured in classrooms with their teachers.

More to come.
