Auckland Transport has announced that passengers will be allowed to bring their pets on trains as part of a three-month trial from Sunday, 16 June to Sunday, 15 September.

All domestic furry friends must be enclosed in an appropriate pet carrier, small enough to be held on the passenger's lap or stored underneath the seat.

AT says pet-carrying passengers can travel during off-peak hours (all day weekends and public holidays, 9am to 3pm and after 6:30pm weekdays).

If the train is too crowded, passengers with pets may be asked to wait for the next service, says AT.

And no, your pet does not require their own AT HOP card. Domestic pets travel free of charge.
