A man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly shot at a father and son playing golf in Whangaparaoa.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of May 31 at the Whangaparaoa Golf Club where the pair said they were continually shot at for more than 30 minutes.

After police were called and an Eagle helicopter sent to the scene, they were initially unable to locate the shooter.

However, a 41-year-old man has now been arrested and charged with careless use of a firearm.

Waitematā North Police Senior Sergeant Steve Pivac said they have seized two firearms, an air pistol and an air rifle with telescope sights, in connection with the incident.

"The victims in this case were understandably shaken by the incident," said Pivac in a statement.

"I would like to reassure the community that this was an isolated incident and we have held the alleged offender to account."

The man is due to appear in the North Shore District Court at a later date.
