The second man killed in a mid-air collision near Masterton on Sunday morning has been named by police.

The accident is believed to have happened in uncontrolled airspace as both aircraft were on final approach to the Hood Arodrome runway.

"We extend our sympathies to Mr Christensen's and Mr McBride's family and friends," acting Det Snr Sgt Haley Ryan said in a statement.

A licensed pilot, Christensen had been flying for about two months for Skydive Wellington, Stuff reports.
