A truck carrying sewage has rolled on a Wellington road, spilling its contents and blocking both lanes.

Breaker Bay Road and Moa Point Road are both closed following the accident, which occurred at 1.30pm on Wednesday.

The driver escaped with minor injuries, and no one else was injured.

A spokesperson for Wellington City Council told Newshub the truck was a sump truck.

Sump trucks provide removal for hazardous and non-hazardous substances such as grease traps, septic tanks and boat bilges.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said the truck contained sewage, which was "leaking all over the road," but could not confirm how far the waste had gone.

Another spokesperson for Wellington City council said they could not comment on the contents of the truck, as it is unknown whether the truck was contracted to work for the Council at the time of the accident.

The truck remains across both lanes, as emergency services will have to wait for a heavy-duty crane to remove it.
