Police are investigating after a toddler was hospitalised with severe head injuries.

The 17-month-old boy was admitted to Starship Hospital on Sunday night and is now fighting for his life. Staff feared the injuries were non-accidental and alerted police.

Auckland City Police Detective Senior Sergeant Geoff Baber told Newshub police are speaking to several people and a scene examination is being carried out at an address in Auckland's CBD.

"Police were advised at around 7:30pm on Sunday 23 June 2019 that the boy had been taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition," he told Newshub.

"Police are continuing to piece together what has led to this child's injuries which we believe at this stage are non-accidental.

"Police are speaking to several people in relation to this matter and there is no further information available at this stage.

Oranga Tamariki central Auckland regional manager Anna Palmer told Newshub they won't comment on specific details of the case.

"No-one wants to see a child seriously injured," she says.

"We work to improve children's lives and prevent harm, and our people feel it deeply when a child suffers.

"We can't comment any further due to privacy reasons, and while a police investigation is underway."
