A 10-year-old boy is dead after being hit by a truck in the Whangārei suburb of Kensington.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 8:10am on Wednesday. It took place on Kamo Rd between Keyte St and Park Ave.
The child died at the scene and police are contacting next of kin.
Construction firm Fulton Hogan says the truck belonged to them and was on its way to a construction site several kilometres away.
"Our thoughts and sympathy are with the family of the child, and we are supporting our driver of the truck at this tragic time," a spokesperson says.
"Any further enquiries to be directed to NZ Police."
The serious crash unit is investigating. The road was initially closed, but has since reopened.
