Weather: Heavy rain forecast mid-week for New Zealand

Heavy rain is set to return to New Zealand as a front moves across the country on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Mid-next week a front moves across NZ with a good feed of tropical moisture, and looks set to bring heavy rain to western and northern parts (although it will feel warmer!)" MetService says on Twitter.

"On Tuesday there is a moderate confidence in rainfall accumulations reaching warning amounts in Fiordland and Westland and a low confidence in warning amounts of rain in Nelson and the north of Buller."

On Wednesday, MetService says there is "high confidence" of warning amounts of rain for Westland. There is also a moderate confidence that rainfall amounts will reach warning criteria for Fiordland, Buller, Nelson, the north of Marlborough and areas of the upper North Island.

A ridge of high pressure is then expected to roll in from Australia and affect the nation on Thursday.
