Weather: Wild gales, powercuts, 'very dangerous' wave warning

New Zealand faces heavy rain, powercuts and "very dangerous" waves as severe weather slams the country later this week.

On Wednesday a large low will cross the North Island with a burst of wind, rain and thunderstorms.

"Severe weather heading for New Zealand this week!" MetService says.

"The North Island is in store to get heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms on Wednesday as another significant system takes aim at the country.

"The rainfall accumulations show that none of the North Island escapes the rain."

Then on Thursday a southerly blast hits. It surges over the North Island on Friday, bringing the possibility of powercuts and 11-metre waves to coastal areas.

"The windiest weather later this week looks to hug coastal areas but especially central and eastern areas of both islands on Friday," WeatherWatch warns.

"Wild winds and the big variation between low pressure and high pressure will churn up very dangerous waves along New Zealand's western coastline with a peak of 10 to 11-metre waves coming in on Friday."
