'Amazing sight': Dolphins swim with paddle boarders off North Island coast

Amazing footage has been captured of a dolphin pod swimming with some paddle boarders off the North Island coast.

On Sunday evening, the footage was posted to the GirlsGetOutThereNZ (GGOTNZ) Facebook page, showing the paddle boarders going about their leisure at Goat Island in Matakana.

And it wasn't long before the pod of dolphins wanted to join in, and began swimming alongside them.

"We were away for a GGOTNZ adventure weekend in Matakana celebrating our birthdays," Sarah-Jane Cansdale told Newshub.

"We were thrilled and excited to have the opportunity to get out there on the water with these magical creatures.

"They seemed pretty happy and they hung around for over an hour."

Cansdale said she had been paddle boarding for more than six years, and while she had seen dolphins over the years, she had never experienced spending such a length of time with them.

"The girls were stoked," she said.

GGOTNZ is a company which aims to inspire girls wanting to leave the couch and lead a healthier lifestyle through paddle boarding - having fun along the way.

Facebook commenters shared Cansdale's delight about the "magical" creatures.

"What a fabulous way to spend your birthday weekend," one said.

"Amazing sight," another wrote.
