Auckland Council is set to review how it operates its pensioner flats after a man was found dead only after neighbours asked management to check on him.

Bryan McGinty was living in the Leabank Court pensioner community in Manurewa when his body was discovered in June, several days after he passed away.

Daniel Newman, a councillor in the Manurewa-Papakura Ward, said in a press release that Haumaru Housing were contacted several times by neighbours of McGinty who were concerned for his welfare.

"The tragic death of Mr McGinty comes amidst numerous allegations from nearby residents that he was struggling to live independently for months prior to his death.

"I am advised that Haumaru staff received a number of requests to intervene due to this elderly man becoming frail, disorientated, and incapable of self-care."

However, Newman says both the neighbours' and his own requests for intervention were turned away by Haumaru Housing.

"I sought an investigation and assurances from Haumaru. My request was dismissed with pompous disregard by the Chief Executive of Haumaru at a time when she needs to fully account for the conduct of her organisation in relation to this man's care."

Auckland mayor Phil Goff says he has directed council staff to look into the incident.

"The concerns raised must be fully investigated. In the first instance I have directed council officers to seek a full report from the board of Haumaru on this matter," Goff told Stuff.

"Should it be required we will seek an independent review of how this matter was handled."

While Haumaru Housing are not obliged to provide any specific care services for their tenants, there are suggestions they need to improve the way they identify those that can no longer live independently in their accommodation.

"Bryan McGinty's passing is a tragedy. But how many other residents are struggling in Haumaru housing when they should be in rest home care? This is a matter that Haumaru needs to address as a matter of immediate urgency," Manurewa Local Board Chairperson Angela Dalton said in a statement.

Haumaru Housing has been approached for comment by Newshub.
