Boy, 14, charged with arson of historic Christchurch building

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with the arson of a historic building in Christchurch.

Christchurch Court News reports he entered no plea when he appeared in the Christchurch Youth Court on Monday, and has been remanded on bail with conditions, for two weeks.

A family group conference will be held to form a plan about how to handle the case.

More than 50 firefighters fought the blaze at the derelict Antonio Hall on Friday.

The fire caused the evacuation of 50 nearby properties.

Sixteen fire engines were involved in tackling the blaze and significant parts of the building were saved. The fire was mostly contained at 8:30pm on Friday night and some firefighters stayed overnight to dampen hot spots.
