Christchurch DIY kids' bike park to be flattened over safety concerns

A group of enterprising 12-year-olds have spent 50 hours on Christchurch's Richmond Hill, shovelling and shifting dirt to make their dream bike park.

Niko Docking and his mates have been enjoying their piece of paradise, before and after school, and at the weekend.

"It's just felt really good to ride something you've built," Docking, a mountain biker, told Newshub.

However, the fun has come to an end. Government department Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) has determined the site on the hillside suburb as being too unsafe for children to play on.

Last week they ordered all the jumps to be flattened, bar one. LINZ manager Matt Bradley claims he isn't the fun police.

"Our primary concern was the proximity to the cliff right next to our no-go zones," Bradley told Newshub.

"Up on the top of the cliffs, there are a number of hazards on the site we try and keep people away from.

Parents of the children say the risk is part of their everyday life in Christchurch.

"Me and the other parents thought it was gold for kids in this day and age, with gaming, inactivity and obesity," says Erik Ellis, a parent from Sumner.

"It's fantastic they wanted to be up here."

Although it was the bike park with arguably the best views in the country, LINZ has had the final say.
