A Christchurch transport firm has been fined more than $390,000 after a man was crushed by a bundle of steel.

Mechanic Anthony Moore, 52, died at Peter Fletcher Transport's yard in 2017.

The company admitted a health and safety breach and has already paid about $150,000 in reparations.

Lisa Moore broke down in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday, describing her crippling and soul-destroying grief, for the loss of her husband and soul-mate of 30 years.

Moore said she hasn't had a decent night's sleep since her husband's death.

"It feels like everyone else has carried with their lives and mine has come to a complete standstill.

"I have become isolated and withdrawn from the world."

Judge Raoul Neave said it was a significant hazard which was not identified and could have been prevented.

The judge imposed a fine of $393,750, adding no reparation order was needed.
