Clover Park shooting: Fears of tit-for-tat violence

There are fears that recent potential gang violence in south Auckland could get extremely out-of-hand.

A person was seriously injured after another shooting on Saturday, in Clover Park near Otara.

A neighbour told Newshub that they heard the sound of two gunshots at around 7am, while another resident described the violence over the last six months as unprecedented for the area.

Though there is no suggestion Saturday's shooting was gang-related, gang expert Jarrod Gilbert from the University of Canterbury says it is still concerning.

"The problem you have of course is when there's a serious injury or a death has occurred, it tends to ratchet up those tensions and tit-for-tat battles, so these things tend to snowball."

Local residents are being urged to report anything suspicious to police.

The shooting happened at a Housing New Zealand property. The agency declined to comment when approached by NZME

Gilbert says it is a scene that authorities know well, despite figures showing gang violence has decreased in recent years.

"We've faced this in New Zealand since the 1970s, tit-for-tat battles with gangs. We know how they occur and we know the threat they pose when they escalate."

There have been several shootings in the area this year - including a father who was fatally shot in his home in April.

Jarrod Gilbert says the authorities will be ramping up pressure on known gang members to stay cool.

"As soon as they put their heads up they get pushed back down again - that just makes existence uncomfortable."

Extra police are now on the streets in the region.
