Dramatic scenes in Mangere as high-speed police chase ends in serious crash

Two people have been injured in a serious crash in Mangere following a high-speed police chase.

Six police cars were at the scene of the crash on Tuesday afternoon on Buckland Road in Mangere, south Auckland.

Residents initially believed a shooting had taken place, as one resident saw a bloodied person being dragged from a vehicle.

A police spokesperson, however, told Newshub that officers attempted to stop a vehicle in Mangere shortly after 2pm.

The driver allegedly sped off before crashing into a traffic island and a powerbox on Buckland Road. The powerbox then burst into flames.

The driver reportedly sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital. It is understood the passenger sustained minor injuries.

"I think it was a police chase," local Sie Terry told Newshub.

"We saw bleeding... we thought he got shot... the cops were dragging him away from the car and the powerbox was on fire."

"We saw the car speeding and the cops chasing it," William, another resident, told Newshub.

"It lost control."

Cordons and diversions are currently in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

The Serious Crash Unit is on the scene.
