Electoral Commission unsure of location of 60,000 people

The Electoral Commission doesn't know the location of approximately 60,000 people.

The commission is reaching out to eligible voters in the lead up to local elections in October, but warn thousands may miss out in having their say after their enrolment update packs were returned marked "gone no address".

At the end of June, enrolment packs were sent to 3.3 million enrolled voters so they could ensure their details were up-to-date. Local elections are held by a postal vote and people need to be at the right address to receive voting papers.

Mandy Bohté, the national manager of enrolment and community engagement at the Electoral Commission, said voters need to get in touch.

"About 90,000 people have enrolled or updated their details this month and made sure they are ready to vote in the local elections," she said.

"There are also approximately 60,000 people whose packs have bounced back marked 'gone no address'. If you've moved house but haven't updated your address, do it now so that you can have your say in the local elections."

Bohté told The AM Show the Electoral Commission wants to find those 60,000 and urges them to get in contact by going online to vote.nz, popping into a PostShop or calling 0800 36 76 56.

"We know that quite often that it is not top of mind for people to update their address with the Electoral Commission.

"Now is the time to do that. If you have moved recently, update your address with us so you can get those voting papers in September."

Details must be updated by August 16 for the postal voting between September 20 and October 12.
