Emergency services respond to massive fire in Whanganui

One person is in a critical condition after a large fire broke out in a 110-year-old heritage building in central Whanganui late on Saturday night.

Emergency services from as far away as Palmerston North responded to the Thain Building, on the corner of Victoria Ave and Taupo Quay, just before 9pm.

Fire and Emergency NZ told Newshub that while the blaze is under control, the building suffered significant damage and fire crews are waiting until daylight to safely assess the building before they enter to check for further hot spots.

A 42-year-old-male is in a stable but critical condition in hospital, while a second person who self-reported to hospital has since been discharged.
