Gas-fitter at centre of Christchurch blast investigation 'very distressed'

A gas-fitter believed to have been working on the property at the centre of the explosion which rocked a Christchurch suburb is extremely upset.

The lawyer of the man, who came forward himself to speak with investigators, would not comment on reports his client had been working on the house the day before - only saying the man is struggling while investigations are underway.

"Well obviously he's very distressed and so that's where things are at," Simon Shamy told Newshub.

"There's a process to be going through and we'll just have to go through that process."

Multiple agencies are investigating the incident, and cordons continue to shrink as experts hone in on the source. They currently believe the Marble Ct blast came from somewhere in the kitchen of the destroyed home.

Many of the damaged homes surrounding the blast are still too dangerous to occupy.
