Hundreds of guns handed over on Friday

There are more chances for owners to hand in their guns today, as more buy-back events are held throughout the country.

They will start at 10am and include Te Aroha, Wellington and Palmerston North.

At events on Friday in Ohope, Palmerston North, Fox Glacier, Amberley and Dunedin, firearms owners were compensated nearly $700,000. More than 240 owners handed in 375 prohibited firearms and 883 parts and accessories.

Gun owners have so far been largely happy with the scheme, saying its simple and refunds are fair.

Former National Party Police Ministers Michael Woodhouse and Anne Tolley visited a gun buyback event in Mosgiel on Friday, and told Stuff they were "very impressed" with how it's being run.

"We wanted to give the people in blue our support," said Tolley.

A list of events and dates is available on the police's website.
