'It looked like I had walked into a bombsite': Neighbour gives eyewitness account to Christchurch explosion

A man who lived next door to the Christchurch house destroyed by a gas explosion has shared his harrowing experience.

Bradley Culver and his wife live next door to the Northwood property that was raised to the ground on Friday after a large gas explosion.

He was sitting in his lounge when the house was torn apart.

"I could see the flash. Our ceiling lifted up, everything was blown off the walls," he told The Project.

He says the noise was so loud, it didn't even sound like an explosion.

"I thought a plane had crashed," said Culver.

Culver says when he first saw the ruins, he didn't expect any survivors.

"It looked as if I had walked into a bombsite; it was literal carnage. You couldn't even make out a house. It was just a pile of rubble and sticks."

Six people have been hospitalised with injuries ranging from serious to critical.

Although unhurt, Culver and his wife have been evacuated from their home, and he says there's no way of knowing when they'll be allowed to return.
