Kindergarten teachers' vote on pay settlement ends Thursday

The Government will soon know whether it has struck a deal with kindergarten teachers.

Thursday is the last day for union members to vote on a proposed settlement, which includes pay parity with primary and secondary teachers.

A spokesperson for the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) told The AM Show earlier in July kindy teachers shouldn't be expected to earn less.

"Early childhood teaching is on the skills shortage list for immigration, and we've got the same issues as primary [schools] - people coming in, then not getting enough to be able to stay," Virginia Oakly said.

"The early years are the most important. The most growth and development for children is happening at that time. It's really critical. There's a lot of important milestones... and we play a vital role in that."

According to the sector's last collective agreement, newly qualified teachers starting out in early childhood education are paid $45,491 - up from $41,067 two years ago.

The offer NZEI members accepted in January will have new primary and secondary teachers starting on $48,410, rising to $51,358 in 2021.

The kindy teachers' ballot closes on Thursday afternoon and results will be announced on Friday.
