Major Auckland street reopens after construction mishap

Contractors have been working around the clock to reopen several central Auckland streets before people head back to work today.

Victoria St West is now open after a panel fell from the Victopia Apartment building last week.

The panel came off the building as Auckland was pummelled by poor weather on Wednesday. No one was injured.

Apartment spokesperson Ian Harris says it's been a massive effort.

"There's probably, collectively, 30 or 40 people working on the job. That includes crane companies, rigging companies and construction companies.

"The construction team has been absolutely fantastic, pulling every string possible to get things moving and get things done as soon as we possibly can."

Meanwhile, Nelson St will remain closed between Victoria St and Fanshawe St until the middle of the week.
