A 27-year-old man has been arrested after a manhunt in Taranaki.

Police were called to the residential address in Hawera at 8.40am on Monday, after reports of a man damaging a car.

"He had a firearm, or what appeared to be a firearm," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

Waihi Road and the surrounding area were cordoned off as the armed offenders searched for the man.

He was located at 2pm at a nearby property in Okaiawa and arrested on charges of willful damage. An air rifle was also found at the address.

The man will appear in Hawera District Court on 21 July.
