Marlborough District Council has worked together with the community to save a line of trees due to be cut down.

The 70 oak trees along Dog Point Road had been a thorn in the side of the council since 2013 when they grew large enough to be a risk to power lines.

Earlier in the year the council decided the most cost effective solution was to chop the trees down. But the local residents were against that plan and began to fundraise to save the 30-year-old trees.

The only feasible option was to underground the cables which would cost $99,590.

Marlborough's local community raised a whopping $86,300 to save the trees leaving a shortfall of $13,290.

On Thursday the Marlborough District Council's assets and services committee announced it would fund the difference by relocating the $14,000 it was going to use to fell the trees.

"Council has been in regular contact with local residents for a number of years to determine the best way forward on this issue," said Councillor Terry Sloan.

"I'm pleased we have been able to work together to reach a safe outcome for all parties involved."
