Armed robbers reportedly put a knife to a man's neck during a robbery at Subway in the Hawke's Bay town of Waipukurau on Sunday.

Two men wearing black masks entered the restaurant armed with a knife and a hammer about 8:15pm on Sunday, and demanded money, a police spokesperson told Newshub.

They left on foot with a small amount of cash.

A worker described the robbers as "young men", NZME reports, and says they were wearing black clothing.

"They shoved me to the ground and put a knife to my neck," Kunal Madaan said.

No-one was injured in the incident and police inquiries are continuing, the spokesperson said.

"They were ready to kill anyone for $400," Madaan told NZME.

Police said anyone with information should call their local police station or 105, and quote file number 190729/6004.
