Mount Eden prisoner diagnosed with measles

A prisoner at Mount Eden Corrections Facility has been diagnosed with measles.

The diagnosis was confirmed on Saturday, and the prisoner is now in isolation along with one other person who was sharing their cell.

Two units have had their visits and activities suspended. Both units house 60 prisoners.

Pregnant women and children under five have been banned from visiting the facility entirely.

Auckland Regional Public Health has warned measles can spread quickly in close quarters such as prisons.

Only staff members confirmed to be immunised against the disease will work with the two prisoners in quarantine.

The rest of the prison population is being tested to see if they are immune. Anyone who is at risk of contracting the potentially deadly disease will be quarantined for two weeks.

Staff members who are non-immune will be quarantined at home.

Visitors to the prison were not upset at being turned away, with one woman saying she'd "rather be safe than sorry."

She told Newshub she will wait until the prison is cleared before returning.

There have been 272 measles cases in Auckland this year.
