In homes around New Zealand people often discuss the latest colour and style trends. But is there a North Island versus South Island divide?

Newshub asked two Resene colour consultants from the North Island and South Island what their favourite colours are, and their top five picks for 2019.

Personally we love the creative names of the Resene colours, but here’s a run-down on this year’s latest and greatest colour styles.

North Island

Brooke Calvert - Resene Colour Consultant, South Auckland

Brooke’s top five colour picks for 2019 - Resene Moccasin, Resene Shabby Chic, Resene Waiouru, Resene Rice Cake and Resene Fast Forward.

Brooke found it hard to select just five top colours. She managed to narrow it down to a few of her favourites. The complexity of the darker colours such as Resene Moccasin, Resene Waiouru and Resene Fast Forward provide a great statement back-drop. They work extremely well when paired with light tones of timber, neutral pinks like Resene Shabby Chic, textured rugs, indoor plants and soft off white linen and Resene Rice cake for inspiration.

"The colours are fun and sophisticated, perfect for those wanting to be a little more adventurous but still have the flexibility of introducing other tones into the space," she says.

South Island

Rebecca Long - Resene Colour Consultant, Christchurch

Rebecca’s top five colour picks for 2019 - Resene Virtuoso, Resene Sunbaked, Resene Influential, Resene Porter and Resene Double Merino.

According to Rebecca Resene Virtuoso is rich, deep plum with a hint of magenta adding elegance all year round. She suggests you can pair it with burnished golds, sleek blacks and thick, knitted throws in the cooler months, and vibrant raspberries and coral pinks during the warmer months.

"Resene Sunbaked is a timeless smoked terracotta and instantly injects warmth and enhances natural timbers," she says. "Resene Influential is a rich, ornate gold with a deep, burnished mustard twist. It will add intrigue and conversation to any home -a perfect way to create a cosy nook."

"While Resene Porter is a dominant, deep black with a soft edge. Smoky in nature it pairs well with a lot of the warmer tones coming through this year."

Resene Double Merino is a warm, versatile neutral with a hint of ash, giving a fresh, white approach without appearing to stark.

And while you may think white is white is white, North vs South have different tastes when comes to off-whites too. With the South tending to be cooler, warmer neutrals and light creams are sold, which helps homes feel warmer in winter.  In the warmer North Island more blackened whites are sold, which helps keeps homes feeler cooler in summer.

Resene is a proud partner of The Block NZ 2019 with teams using some of the top colours in their rooms.
