Poll: Should Grace Millane's alleged killer have name suppression?

  • 04/07/2019

Name suppression given to the man accused of killing British tourist Grace Millane is back in the spotlight.

In December, Google breached suppression orders by sending an email to subscribers of its Trends service which included the name of the alleged killer - something that has received strong condemnation by Justice Minister Andrew Little.

Little had a stinging message for the internet giant on Wednesday, telling it "don't be evil", after it was revealed that Google hadn't changed its systems since the breach.

Google has said the name's publications was a "relatively unique" situation and respects New Zealand law.

While suppression orders are enforced to ensure a fair trial, their validity has been scrutinised as suppressed facts may still be published overseas and found online by Kiwis.
