Search continues for missing Wellington family

The search will continue on Wednesday for a family of three missing in Wellington.

A 50-year-old man and his 11 and 14-year-old daughters left for hike around the steeply sloped Days Bay in Lower Hutt on Tuesday.

They were due home at 3:30pm, but never returned and police were contacted by a concerned family member at 6pm.

Sniffer dogs scoured the East Harbour Regional Park last night along with eight search and rescue teams of three people, but they came up empty.

More dogs and Land Search and Rescue volunteers will head out onto the track on Wednesday. The public is asked to avoid the East Harbour Regional Park while dogs track the group.

Tracks in the area the family went missing from take at most two hours and 30 minutes to complete and go through dense bush.

A ranger told Stuff it would be hard to get lost inside the park.

"It's not an easy track to get lost on its pretty clear, they must have gone off track," Jo Greenman said.

Forecaster MetService says temperatures in Wellington dropped to 10C overnight and rain is forecast from 4pm onwards.

Anyone who has information is asked to contact police on (04) 381 2000 or 105.
